CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Madison bit the inside of her cheek and willed the heat out of her face. She wasn’t sure what made her go into Jake’s room. Bullshit. She knew exactly why she’d opened his door. Lust. Pure and simple. Jake Boxer standing there in nothing but a towel was a sight to behold. His body looked incredible, from his washboard abs to his broad shoulders, and it felt even better, like when she’d been pressed against it all that afternoon. And that kiss in the alley. It was so damn hot. She’d needed him. Needed to release the pressure he’d built in her. God, it was mortifying how much she wanted him. She was getting all tingly even now just thinking about him.

She was totally objectifying her bodyguard. It was so wrong on every friggin’ level, but she just didn’t give a shit. He was hot, and she was completely overwhelmed. Being in his arms just felt so right. Like she could relax for the first time in…well, forever. He was sexy as it was, but the fact that he made her feel secure added fuel to the fire already burning within her.

She wanted to feel his body on hers again. She wanted to get lost in him. That’s why she’d gone in there. And he knew it.

Yesterday afternoon had been a mistake. At least, that’s what he must think. He’d taken great pains to distance himself from her. It stung, but she understood. She was his client. Correction. Drake was his client, but she was the one getting the benefit of his services. In more ways than one. She had to smile. Still, after Petrov left, she’d thought sex with Jake would be a fun way to pass the time. A distraction. Now she knew better. He was an addiction. She’d just whetted her appetite in Mugello, and now she’d wanted more. She’d had him again and she still wasn’t satisfied. She wanted to think it was just the crazy situation that had her acting this way but she had a sneaking suspicion, she’d be addicted to Jake no matter what the circumstances were.

She let out a long breath. Nope. He was right. It all had been a mistake. She needed to remember that. Once this ordeal was over, it was back home to New York and maybe, just maybe, she’d start her new career as a handbag designer. If she didn’t end up in an Italian prison.

Madison crawled under the thick white duvet and tried to go to sleep. She was exhausted but she just couldn’t turn her brain off. Why her? Why would the Veridanis choose her? She had no answers. Why steal the necklace? Maybe it was an insurance job. They wanted the money, but that didn’t make any sense. They had money unless their entire balance sheet was a lie.

She rolled onto her side. No. No matter how good their in-house accounting was, they couldn’t hide it if they were that broke. And also, although the necklace was north of five million euro, that wasn’t much for a company like Veridani.
